Do I grade content or form?
Since the purpose of writing is to communicate your ideas to another person, it is important that there are ideas inherent in the writing (the content) and that the writing is presented clearly enough that your reader understands the ideas (the form). With this in mind, faculty should create rubrics that focus on "higher order concerns," or content, such as meeting the assignment guidelines, organization, and focus, along with "lower-order concerns." such as academic voice, grammar, and mechanics.
Below are two sample rubrics, which an instructor can modify by changing the point values or adding other aspects of the assignment to be assessed.
